Glass – MØ

Is it too early to decide on a summer anthem? Cause I think I just did.. All of her songs are super good, mellow, and upbeat, as contradictory as that sounds. I just with I could pronounce her name.. Be sure to check out other stuff by her, like “Pilgrim”, “Maiden”, and “XXX 88”, which just also happens to feature Diplo, one of my favorite producers.

Just a song that’s upbeat, fun, and happy, especially when you’re not. It’s incredible how hard it is to be stressed out about stuff when this is playing.

I’ve been MIA for a while, so what better way to get back at it than to post a straight up upbeat indie song, as per usual. I like these guys, it’s fun stuff.

All 19 Songs from the 50/50 Soundtrack

On the topic of movie soundtracks, I found “50/50” to also have a pretty great one after watching it. Looking into the soundtrack, I stumbled across this post, which documents each song really well, in a way I couldn’t do better myself. Check out the list, the movie, and of course, the other blog. My favorite track would have to be “The Other Side of Mt. Heart Attack” by the Liars, but my opinion doesn’t matter for anything, so make sure to check out the rest of the songs too.

Reelsoundtrack Blog

There’s nothing 50/50 about the soundtrack to the movie 50/50, except for the studio not releasing an album. It’s a collection of 19 great songs that suit the movie well and help tell it’s story. From both the sound and intonation of Radiohead’s “High and Dry” when Adam finds out he has cancer, to the resolution told through the sounds of Pearl Jam’s “Yellow Ledbetter,” the music is in 50/50 tells the story of Adam and his life. The story is based on the real life struggles of Seth Rogen’s best friend – and you could hear the soundtrack to his days in the songs chosen to bring that fact into fiction.

Using Roy Orbison’s “Crying” to tell the tale of a crazy ex-girlfriend who you aren’t crying at all for anymore was perfect. As was throwing the Bee Gees into the pot-laden macaroons that got Adam through chemo. If…

It’s Hard To Get Around The Wind – Alex Turner

•January 9, 2014 • Leave a Comment

Alex Turner is the lead singer of the Arctic Monkeys, and he agreed to do the soundtrack for a movie called “Submarine” that came out in 2010. This song is off of that soundtrack. The movie, soundtrack, and this song are all phenomenal. The song has a mellow vibe that manages to invite you to lean on it while it shakes you to the core. The movie is immediately in my top 5, and I would recommend it to anyone as one of the best coming-of-age movies out there today.

My Top Bands

•December 16, 2013 • Leave a Comment

I figured that it’s probably a good idea to keep a track of my favorite bands at any given time, so I decided to log them here every so often, whenever my musical tastes shift. It’ll stay as a reminder of what I like now and what I liked then. And, because no one can ever pick just one favorite band, I’ll be posting my top 5 every time I do decide to update it.

December 2013

1.) Tokyo Police Club

2.) Bonobo

3.) Thieves Like Us

4.) Noah and the Whale

5.) Bon Iver

Golden Sea – French Films

When I think of things to post, I either pick something new I’ve heard, or I go through my favorites list on my Youtube profile. I had to go pretty far back to find this band again, and I’m so glad I did. This band’s got a fantastic sound all around, and just feels young and energetic. It’s rock, pop, and chill, all at once, and just amazing. Also check out “Pretty in Decadence” and whatever else you find by these guys.

Weekend – Smith Westerns

It’s that song that you know you’ve heard somewhere before. That song that you finally find, then realize it’s been in your iPod for years now. It’s that song that you just can’t stop listening to. Fantastic music by a fantastic band.

Head Full of Doubt/Road Full of Promise – The Avett Brothers

Here’s some really good folkin’ music. Ha. Shoot me. Seriously though, these guys are quintessential woolen cap-wearing, beard-growing folk artists, and they could not be better. Especially with the fall weather, it gives you another reason to bust out that flannel and just watch the world go by. Just make sure you listen to the words, it’s hard hitting stuff. Check out their other stuff, like “I and Love and You”.
